Data from manufacturer documents
Will a 36-inch refrigerator fit a 36-inch opening?
Often, but not always. A “36-inch” refrigerator is a size class, not a promise. We checked the installation documents of 445 refrigerators about 36 inches wide. 187 of them, 42%, need an opening wider than 36 inches once the side gaps their manufacturer asks for are counted. Most need only 1/4 to 1/2 inch more. That’s still enough to stop a refrigerator going in, or to leave it without the room its manual says it needs.
The short answer
- The fridge itself is usually narrower than 36 in: typically 35 5/8 to 35 7/8 in.
- The opening has to be wider than the fridge. Manufacturers ask for a gap at each side for air and for removing the refrigerator. The median is 3/8 in a side. 223 models fit an opening of exactly 36 in, and 187 need more.
- French-door models are the most likely to need more: 52% need more than 36 in. Side-by-sides: 20%. Bottom freezers and built-ins almost never do.
- A few need much more. Some manuals ask for inches, not fractions, at each side.
How much wider than 36 inches, by type
| Type | Models about 36 in wide | Need more than 36 in | Median opening needed |

33-inch and 30-inch refrigerators
The same thing happens at the other common widths:
- 33 in: of 92 refrigerators 32 1/2 to 33 in wide, 56 (61%) need an opening wider than 33 in, and 25 need 1 in or more. Some “33-inch” models are 33 1/8 in wide, so they can’t go in a 33 in gap at all. For example, Frigidaire FRSS2323AW needs 33 5/8 in.
- 30 in: of 152 refrigerators 29 1/4 to 30 in wide, 92 (61%) need more than 30 in. The median opening needed is 30 1/2 in.

What to check before you buy
- Measure the opening at three heights, at the bottom, at counter height and at the top, and use the smallest. Trim, baseboards and uneven walls narrow it.
- Look for the model’s cutout or opening width in its installation guide. If there isn’t one, add the side gap it asks for, twice, to its actual width.
- Don’t use the size class. “36-inch” tells you the class. The actual width and the gaps decide the fit.
- Check the hinge side separately. Next to a wall, the door needs more room again.

How we measured
- Models about 36 in wide: the 445 active models whose closed-door width is 35 1/4 to 36 in.
- Opening needed: the manufacturer’s printed cutout or opening width where its documents give one. Otherwise the actual width plus the side gap its manual asks for on each side, the same rule the site’s fit checker uses. Of the 187 that need more than 36 in, 45 come from a printed cutout and 142 from width plus side gaps.
