Data from manufacturer documents
How much room does a refrigerator door need beside a wall?
Most measuring guides say to leave about 2 inches between a refrigerator and a side wall so the door can open. We checked that against the installation documents of 639 current refrigerators. The median model needs 3 1/4 inches, and 72% need more than 2 inches. French-door models typically need 3 3/4 inches.
The short answer
- French door: plan on 3 3/4 in on the hinge side. 89% of French-door models need more than 2 in.
- Side-by-side: about 2 in is typical, but 42% need more.
- Top and bottom freezer: usually 2 1/2 to 2 5/8 in. Many of these doors can be reversed, so the hinge can go on the open side.
- Built-in and column models: they vary from 3/8 in to over 4 in, so check the model.
The figure matters when the wall runs past the front of the refrigerator. If the wall stops at the cabinet front, the door usually swings clear of it.

Two things that surprised us
- “Zero clearance” isn’t zero. Brands use the phrase for doors that don’t swing far past the side of the cabinet. The same spec sheets still ask for room beside a wall: 2 1/8 in on one LG model, 3 3/4 in on one Samsung model.
- Languages can disagree. One Amana planning sheet asks for 2 in on its English page and 3 3/4 in on its French and Spanish pages, for the same refrigerator. Where a model’s documents give more than one figure, we list the larger one.
What to check before you buy
- Which side the hinge is on, and whether the door can be reversed. Look for “door reversal” in the manual.
- The model’s own figure for room beside a wall so the door can open. This is not the same as the side gap for air, which is often 1/8 to 1/2 in.
- Whether the wall runs past the front of the refrigerator, or stops at the cabinet front.
- Whether you need the door past 90°. Removing crisper drawers or shelves often needs the door opened further, and that needs more room again.
Questions people ask
How much space do I need between a refrigerator and a wall for the door to open?
For the door to open to 90°, the median refrigerator needs 3 1/4 in on the hinge side, and 72% of 639 models need more than 2 in. French-door models typically need 3 3/4 in; side-by-sides about 2 in.
Is 2 inches enough for a refrigerator door next to a wall?
Often not. 72% of the 639 models whose documents give a figure need more than 2 in, and 89% of French-door models do.
Do “zero clearance” refrigerators need no space beside a wall?
No. The phrase means the door doesn’t swing far past the side of the cabinet. The same spec sheets still ask for room beside a wall: 2 1/8 in on one LG model and 3 3/4 in on one Samsung model.
What can I do if my refrigerator has to go right against a wall?
Put the hinge on the open side: many single-door and bottom-freezer doors can be reversed. Otherwise choose a model whose printed clearance fits, and check whether the wall runs past the front of the refrigerator or stops at the cabinet front.
How we measured
- Source documents: each figure comes from the manufacturer’s spec sheet, installation instructions, planning guide or owner’s manual for that model. Every value was checked against the document page it came from.
- Printed and calculated figures: 417 of the 639 figures are printed in the documents. The other 222 are calculated from other printed dimensions, for example half the difference between the width with doors open and the case width. On the printed figures alone, the median is 3 9/16 in, and 73% need more than 2 in.
- Door angle: 344 figures are for a door opened to 90°. The other 295 come from documents that ask for room “next to a wall” without naming an angle. On the 90° figures alone, the median is 3 3/4 in, and 79% need more than 2 in.
- Excluded: the other 323 of our 962 models, whose documents don’t give a figure beside a wall.
- Date: data as of October 2026. Models and documents change, so use each model’s page for the current figure.
